Medtronic touts 7-year data on Prestige cervical disc

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said yesterday that 7-year data on its Prestige LP cervical disc showed favorable results compared to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion procedures The Prestige LP disc is indicated for single-level cervical disc disease and is designed to preserve motion in the neck, unlike fusion surgery procedures that do not allow such motion, Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic said. Data from the 7-year follow-ups was presented at the North American Spine Society’s annual meeting in Chicago this week. “The 7-year results of this study show that patients receiving cervical disc replacement maintain motion and quality of life. At 24 months, Prestige LP patients demonstrated statistical superiority in overall success, and we see that trend continue in this 7-year data,” Dr. Matthew Gornet of St. Louis, Miss.’ Orthopedic Center said in a press release. The study included information from 211 patients with the Prestige disc and 182 historical control ACDF patients.  It found that Prestige patients showed higher statistical improvement at 74.9% versus 63.2% and had shorter median time before returning to work at 40 versus 60 days respectively. “Motion in the neck matters, which is why Medtronic has built the most comprehensive portfolio of cervical disc technology.
