Initial Report of a Prospective Dosimetric and Clinical Feasibility Trial Demonstrates Potential of Protons to Increase the Therapeutic Ratio in Breast Cancer Compared with Photons

In this prospective study of radiation therapy for intact and post-mastectomy breast cancer requiring regional nodal irradiation, proton therapy improved heart and lung dose in all patients (right and left sided). For left-sided patients, median mean cardiac dose decreased from 5.9 Gy with conventional therapy to 0.6 Gy with proton therapy. For all patients, ipsilateral lung V5 and V20 were significantly reduced with proton therapy and better IMN and level II axillary coverage was achieved.
