Ehlers Danlos syndrome and gastrointestinal manifestations: a 20‐year experience at Mayo Clinic

Conclusions & InferencesEDS HM and other subtypes should be considered in patients with chronic functional GI symptoms and abdominal vascular lesions. Patients with Ehlers Danlos syndrome (EDS) experience chronic GI symptoms, particularly those with EDS hypermobility (HM) subtype whose symptoms are consistent with classical functional GI disorders. However, the vascular subtype of EDS may result in significant vascular diseases including abdominal vessel aneurysms and effects of ischemia. In this retrospective review of the medical records of patients diagnosed with EDS at Mayo Clinic, we found that 56% had GI manifestations. Among those tested, 22.3% had abnormal gastric emptying, 28.3% had abnormal colonic transit, and 60% had rectal evacuation disorder. Aneurysms of the main abdominal vessels should be sought in EDS vascular subtype.
