Sinus arrest during citalopram treatment: Dose- or age-related?

Citalopram is the most selective of the serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors that is used for long-term antidepressant treatment with relative cardiovascular safety [1]. Citalopram has no significant reported effect on blood pressure, cardiac conduction nor heart rate, but exacerbation of preexisting bradycardia has been reported [2,3]. The emphasis on the need for long-term antidepressant treatment in elderly patients suffering from depression has required that particular attention be paid to cardiovascular safety in this age group [4].
