UD finding sheds light on infertility puzzle, could improve in vitro fertilization

(University of Delaware) Patricia A. Martin-DeLeon, a reproductive biologist at the University of Delaware, and her team have revealed for the first time communication between the sperm and the fallopian tube that helps prepare the sperm for its final big push into the egg. (BJOG. 2017;124:1198–1205) Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is used in many countries as infertility occurs in ∼9% of the world population. In some European countries it has been reported that at least 3% of children were conceived via ART. Severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and the association between PPH and pregnancies achieved by ART is unclear. The aim of this case-control study was to determine whether an association exists between ART and severe PPH as well as to determine whether any association was affected by other risk factors for severe PPH.

Conclusion Our study provides the first evidence of the pathophysiologic contribution of the well-known angiostatic protein, PF4, on human reproductive biology. The increase of the intrafollicular PF4 and its anti-permeability effect might affect the formation of FF and folliculogenesis in PCOS.

This study evaluated the changes in seminal oxidative stress status, inflammatory biomarkers, semen parameters, sperm DNA integrity and pregnancy rate following 24 weeks of resistance exercise in infertile patients. A total of 1228 sedentary infertile patient (aged 25–40 years) were screened and 430 were randomized to exercise (EX, n = 216) and non-exercise (NON-EX, n = 214) groups. Semen samples were taken before, 12 and 24 weeks as well as 7 and 30 days during recovery. Key findings Exercise intervention favorably attenuated inflammation as indicated by seminal cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and ...
