From Doing to Being: Incorporating Faith into Diabetes Self-Care Education

This article offers educational strategies based on liturgical anthropology that can be incorporated into any diabetic self-care education program, but particularly in faith communities. Lifestyle habits are tightly interwoven with cultural, social, and spiritual beliefs. Liturgical anthropology explores how cultural and spiritual customs mold us and influence our behavior choices. This study has been carried out to examine the effect of SSF by Rhizopus oryzae on the bioactive content, bioactivity, bioaccessibility and bioavailability of 4 different varieties of rice bran. In vitro digestion with dialysis was carried out to assess the bioavailability and bioaccessibility of rice bran bioactives. Methanolic extracts and digested fractions of fermented and unfermented rice brans were analyzed for total phenolic (TPC), flavonoid (TF), carotenoid (TC), and total anthocyanin content (TAC). Additionally, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory property and the anti-diabetic property was also evaluated. The...

Publication date: Available online 23 January 2020Source: Life SciencesAuthor(s): Irshad Ahmad, Muddasarul HodaAbstractResveratrol is an important phenolic phytochemical from the therapeutic perspective. It has therapeutic impacts over wide range of diseases, especially the ones related to oxidative stress. Resveratrol, being primarily a potent anti-oxidant phytochemical, has significant impact against major diseases as inflammatory disorders, diabetes, and cancer. In the current review article, we intend to highlight the molecular aspects of the mechanism of action of resveratrol against major diabetic implications, namel...

Publication date: Available online 23 January 2020Source: Genes &DiseasesAuthor(s): S. Mohana Devi, I. Mahalaxmi, J. Kaavya, V. Chinnkulandhai, V. BalachandarAbstractEpigenetic mechanisms play an important part in the regulation of gene expression and these alterations may induce long-term changes in gene function and metabolism. They have received extensive attention in bridging the gap between environmental exposures and disease development via their influence on gene expression. DNA methylation is the earliest discovered epigenetic alteration. In this review, we try to examine the role of DNA methylation and histone...

Authors: Lim YM, Lew DH, Roh TS, Song SY Abstract BACKGROUND: Closed-suction drains are widely used in expander-based breast reconstruction. These drains are typically removed using a volume-based criterion. The drainage volume affects the hospital stay length and the recovery time. However, few studies have analyzed the factors that influence drainage volume after expander-based breast reconstruction. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data regarding daily drainage from patients who underwent expander-based breast reconstruction between April 2014 and January 2018 (159 patients, 176 expanders). Patient and o...

e;lez-Chávez A, Elizondo-Argueta S Abstract The discovery and synthesis of insulin has been vital in the study and treatment of diabetes mellitus. From the studies carried by Dr. Nicolae C. Paulescu in 1921 and descriptions of the pancrein, before those published by Banting and Macleod, the Nobel Prize winners in 1923, more metabolic and non-metabolic actions have been discovered and that are fundamental for life, growth and development of different organs and systems. Diverse studies in animal models have shown the participation in the development of the central nervous system, regeneration, neuronal apopt...

ConclusionsOur study analyzed the relationship of frailty and postoperative complications in patients with long bone fractures. Patients had increased likelihood of morbidity, independent of other comorbidities and demographic factors. The mFI may have a role as a simple, easy to use risk assessment tool in cases of orthopedic trauma.
