A pilot study using solution-focused coaching for health promotion in children and young people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Many children with DMD experience considerable weight gain due to corticosteroid treatment and reduced energy expenditure. Obesity prevalence in boys with DMD has been cited as 73% by 13 years. Existing health promotion interventions for children with physical disabilities are limited and rarely tailored to individuals. Coaching intervention approaches promote collaborative relationships between healthcare professionals, clients and families. In particular, solution-focused coaching uses strategic questions to help children identify personally meaningful goals and develop practical solutions to move towards those goals.
