UCSF Heart and Lung Transplant Patients Gather for Celebration

Transplant recipients David Brown and Michele DesMarais served as emcees at the celebration. Heart and lung transplant recipients are living longer than ever before, thanks to rapid advances in technology, medications and surgical procedures. That progress was cause for celebration on Aug. 22 at UCSF's Mission Bay campus, where about 400 heart and lung transplant patients and their family members gathered for a special event in their honor.

We have applied cutting-edge mass cytometry (MC) technology to serial bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells obtained from lung transplant recipients (LTRs) and have used it to compare the cellular composition of the BAL compartment in patients who remain stable or go on to develop lung allograft dysfunction (LAD), defined here as a drop, from any cause, in the forced expiratory volume in 1 second of 20% from the best post-transplant baseline value.

Chronic Allograft Dysfunction (CLAD) with Bronchiolitis obliterans (BOS) phenotype is a major limitation for long term survival after lung transplantation (LT). Predictive biomarkers for BOS are unavailable. Moreover, understanding the biology of CLAD is crucial for prevention and potential treatment.
