Conclusion: Results suggest that G6PD deficiency has no protective effect on nor is a risk factor for AMD. Larger studies are necessary to confirm whether increased diastolic blood pressure and LDL-cholesterol and lower values of WBC count and AST are risk factors for AMD. In this study, we found that cofilin competes with tau for direct microtubule binding in vitro, in cells, and in vivo, which inhibits tau-induced microtubule assembly. Genetic reduction of cofilin mitigates tauopathy and synaptic defects in Tau-P301S mice and movement deficits in tau transgenic C. elegans. The pathogenic effects of cofilin are selectively mediated by activated cofilin, as active but not inactive cofilin selectively interacts with tubulin, destabilizes microtubules, and promotes tauopathy. These results therefore indicate that activated cofilin plays an essential intermediary role in neurotoxic signaling th...

Retinal Degenerations (RD) are the leading cause of blindness in the United States. The degeneration of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) is associated with various types of RD such as Stargardt ’s disease, retinitis pigmentosa, choroideremia, Late-Onset Retinal Degeneration (L-ORD), and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The RPE as a layer of cells in the back of the eye. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the health and integrity of retinal photoreceptors. RPE dysfunction and d egeneration leads to photoreceptor cell death and vision loss, a common factor among several forms of RD.To resolve these chall...

This study showed a good safety and tolerability profile of the studied substance (Monteleone et al., 2012). Since TGFβ has been described to induce the profibrogenetic response of fibroblasts, patients were monitored for 6 months with intestinal ultrasonography, not showing signs of intestinal stenosis. Moreover, half of the patients maintained remission during the 6 months follow up period (Zorzi et al., 2012). Afterwards, a randomized, double-blind, phase 2 study was conducted in CD patients with inflammatory lesions in the terminal ileum and/or right colon, with steroid-dependence/resistance, randomized to three ...

Conclusions In conclusion, articles in this Research Topic made a very significant contribution to our understanding of the role played by environmental factors, dysbiotic conditions, and infections in triggering diseases. Since this is a rapidly expanding area of research, many other factors contributing to the onset of these diseases are not covered here. We are confident, however, that further studies will expand the list as well as bring a better understanding of mechanisms involved in the onset of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Author Contributions All authors listed have made a substantial, direct and i...

arra Antonio Molino Lutein has several benefits for human health, playing an important role in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, amelioration of the first stages of atherosclerosis, and some types of cancer. In this work, the Scenedesmus almeriensis microalga was used as a natural source for the supercritical fluid (SF) extraction of lutein. For this purpose, the optimization of the main parameters affecting the extraction, such as biomass pre-treatment, temperature, pressure, and carbon dioxide (CO2) flow rate, was performed. In the first stage, the effect of mechanical pre-treatme...

Publication date: Available online 6 March 2019Source: Pharmacological ResearchAuthor(s): Rongyuan Chen, Chunsik Lee, Xianchai Lin, Chen Zhao, Xuri LiAbstractOxidative stress, due to insufficiency of antioxidants or over-production of oxidants, can lead to severe cell and tissue damage. Oxidative stress occurs constantly and has been shown to be involved in innumerable diseases, such as degenerative, cardiovascular, neurological, and metabolic disorders, cancer, and aging, thus highlighting the vital need of antioxidant defense mechanisms. Vascular endothelial growth factor B (VEGF-B) was discovered a long time ago, and is...
