Conclusions: The most common treatments for asthma and COPD in Poland are inhaled glucocorticosteroids and long-acting β2 agonists. The main factors influencing treatment decisions are the current GINA and GOLD recommendations as well as patients' age, comorbidities, and price of treatment. PMID: 31320855 [PubMed]

Authors: Ge Z, Yang Y, Zhou X, Zhang J, Li B, Wang X, Luo X Abstract The present study aimed to investigate the effects of hyperplasia suppressor gene (HSG) overexpression on the activation of airway fibroblasts in a rat model of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and assess the underlying molecular mechanisms. The rat model of COPD was established by injection of papain and confirmed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Airway fibroblasts were identified using immunofluorescence, and HSG expression was facilitated by an HSG vector. Cell viability, apoptosis and the levels of matrix metallopeptidase‑9 (MM...

Authors: Liang Z, Long F, Wang F, Yang Y, Xiao J, Deng K, Gu W, Zhou L, Xie J, Jian W, Chen X, Jiang M, Zheng J, Peng T, Chen R Abstract Autoimmunity may serve a role in the pathological features of a subgroup of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, in immunological subgroups of COPD patients, the interrelationships between airway and circulating autoantibody responses, and clinical parameters, remain unclear. The present study was undertaken to evaluate these interrelationships in various immunological subgroups of COPD patients. Sputum supernatant and serum obtained from 102 p...

HarveyAbstractBasolateral membrane K+ channels play a key role in basal and agonist stimulated Cl- transport across airway epithelial cells by generating a favourable electrical driving force for Cl- efflux. The K+ channel sub-types and molecular mechanisms of regulation by hormones and secretagoues are still poorly understood. Here we have identified the type of K+ channels involved in cAMP and Ca2+ stimulated Cl- secretion and uncovered a novel anti-secretory effect of dexamethasone mediated by inhibition of basolateral membr...

This study examined the anti-inflammatory properties of tanshinones. In addition, lipid-soluble compounds which were specific to Tanshinone class were also highlighted, out of which two compounds, dihydrotanshinone I and cryptotanshinone were selected with the aim of creating a new research perspective in order to further elucidate the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. Moreover, interaction analyses were carried out successfully to determine the interactions formed between both dihdrotanshinone I and cryptotanshinone, and target proteins. The bioactivity properties and various other pharmacokinetic a...

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic disease with a high prevalence of malnutrition. There are a few data in the literature on the use of Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) in COPD patients. MNA is a widely used tool for assessing nutritional status in the elderly. Aim of the study is to identify the prevalence of malnutrition in COPD patients using MNA and evaluate the relationships between MNA and body composition (bioelectrical impedance analysis = BIA).

This study is designed to investigate the effects of pulmonary arterial hypertension on RV systolic and diastolic functions in cases of COPD and to correlate RV systolic and diastolic functions with pulmonary arterial pressure. Materials and Methods: 100 patients admitted in various medical wards of tertiary care Hospital and a primary care hospital with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease persons with age and sex-matched. 35 age and sex matched person without any associated and known disease were taken as control subjects. Selection of cases has been made on basis of detailed history, thorough clinical examin...

Conclusion: The epidemiological picture of TB showed that males were predominant in our study however female were more affected in younger age group compared to male. More than 51% of the cases were in productive age group which affects the socioeconomic condition of family and society. More than 2/3 of patients were from lower socioeconomic group with low BMI. Therefore improving nutrition and immunity can play an important role. 2.3% of the cases were HIV reactive and were on ART. Co-morbidities like COPD and Diabetes were seen in our study which were statistically significant and had impact on the treatment outcome of r...
