Doesn’t it seem like Botox is showing up everywhere as a medical treatment? Botox is a brand of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), a protein substance originally derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In its original form it was the toxin responsible for botulism, the paralyzing illness often caused by eating contaminated food. BoNT is now used to treat a number of medical conditions including muscle spasms, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, and some eye muscle conditions. However, one of its most common uses is in the preventive treatment of chronic migraine. Chronic migraine, defined as headache occurrin...

Endometriosis is a common cause of chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea and infertility. Although 6 –10% of women of child bearing age are affected by the disease, and even more in the group of patients with fertility problems, diagnosis is often delayed and treatment can be challenging. Depending on the complaints, extent of disease and the goals of treatment (fertility treatment, pain reducti on, …), both medical and surgical options are available for the management of this pathology and often a  multidisciplinary approach will be necessary. Although diagnostic laparoscopy with histologic confirmation...

By Matthew Warren The placebo effect is a curious phenomenon. A wealth of literature has shown that inert treatments can not only produce medical benefits like pain relief, but also have cognitive effects like boosting creativity and learning. And while many of those studies involve misleading people into thinking that they are receiving an effective intervention, a new study in Scientific Reports shows that this deception is not always necessary. Researchers have found that taking a placebo can reduce people’s anxiety before a test — even when they know they are taking an inactive pill.  A...

Study Design. Prospective research in middle-aged and elderly people. Objective. To investigate low back pain (LBP) and neuropathic pain (NeP); spinal alignment and range of motion (ROM); spinal degenerative changes in plain radiography; osteoporosis; muscle strength; and physical ability as possible risk factors for poor quality of life (QOL). Summary of Background Data. The aging of society has led to an increase in elderly people with chronic pain, including LBP and NeP. However, there has been no analysis of NeP and spinal sagittal alignment as potential risk factors for decreased QOL in the healthy general pop...

Study Design. Retrospective cohort study. Objective. To identify age-related changes in cervical sagittal parameters using standard radiographs. Summary of Background Data. Cervical sagittal balance is important for the maintenance of neutral head posture and horizontal gaze. Degenerative changes in the cervical spine that occur with aging may alter cervical sagittal balance, which can lead to chronic neck pain and predispose to various cervical spine pathologies. Methods. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 151 patients with lateral cervical spine radiographs taken at our institution between December 2...

AbstractThis systematic review examined the extent to which measures of religiosity/spirituality (R/S): (1) are associated with pain, function, pain-related beliefs (beliefs), coping responses, and catastrophizing in people with chronic pain; and (2) moderate the association between beliefs, coping and catastrophizing, and pain and function. Experimental and observational studies examining at least one of these research questions in adults with chronic pain were eligible. Two reviewers independently performed eligibility screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. Twenty studies were included. Most studies focused ...

ConclusionsMost subjects were females and developed calcinosis in adulthood. Small joints (hand and wrist) and the upper limbs were frequently involved. The presence of different phases of pathological features in the same subject suggests that about half of the study participants had been misdiagnosed with another condition (such as gout, osteoarthritis, etc.). Complete surgical excision led to cure without recurrence during follow-up in majority of the study participants.
