Chronic Alcoholism and the Danger of Profound Hypomagnesemia

A 57-year-old bartender suddenly lost consciousness while serving drinks at work. She was unconscious for several seconds before spontaneous arousal. Her episode was without preceding chest pain, light-headedness or palpitations and was not accompanied by seizure-like activity. Her medical history included obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, type II diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux, and chronic hypomagnesemia. She had no history of cardiac disease or syncopal events and no family history of sudden death.
