Conclusions This study showed that the male sex and people under 20 years of age are mostly at risk. Therefore, education for groups at risk is very important.

Conclusions/SignificanceLoratadine, cyproheptadine and clofazimine inhibit TcAAAP069 proline transporter and also present trypanocidal effect against allT.cruzi life stages in strains from three different DTUs. These CV structural analogues could be a starting point to design therapeutic alternatives to treat Chagas disease by finding new indications for old drugs. This approach, called drug repurposing is a recommended strategy by the World Health Organization to treat neglected diseases, like Chagas disease, and combination therapy may improve the possibility of success of repositioned drugs.

Authors: Lizardo K, Ayyappan JP, Ganapathi U, Dutra WO, Qiu Y, Weiss LM, Nagajyothi JF Abstract Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi which is endemic in Latin America. T. cruzi infection results in a latent infection with approximately a third of latently infected patients developing chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCM). CCM is a common cause of cardiomyopathy in endemic regions and has a poor prognosis compared to other cardiomyopathies. The factors responsible for the transition from the asymptomatic indeterminate latent stage of infection to CCM are poorly understood. Our previous studies demonstrated th...

Publication date: Available online 17 January 2020Source: Parasitology InternationalAuthor(s): Toshihiro Tokiwa, Hisashi Yoshimura, Keiko Ito, Shyun Chou, Masami YamamotoAbstractThere is limited knowledge about parasites of the endangered Ryukyu long-furred rat, Diplothrix legata (Murinae, Rodentia) endemic to Okinawa, Tokunoshima, and Amami-Oshima Islands in Japan. In the present study, postmortem histopathological examination of an individual found on Amami-Oshima Island revealed a mixed helminth infection of Calodium hepaticum, Hydatigera taeniaeformis, and Angiostrongylus cantonensis. These helminths are considered non...

In this study, we aimed to investigate phlebovirus and Leishmania parasites circulating in a focus of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) located in a highly irrigated area within the arid Central Tunisia, known mainly to be endemic for zoonotic cutaenous leishmaniasis (ZCL) caused Leishmania major and transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi. Sand flies were collected using CDC light traps in the village of Saddaguia, an emergent focus of ZVL located in Central Tunisia during September-October 2014, 2015, and 2016. Pools of live female sand flies were screened for phleboviruses and Leishmania by nested PCR in the polymerase ...

Conclusions/SignificanceThis study established satisfactory results inLeishmania parasite clearing bothin-vivo andin-vitro. Therefore,U.dioica extract can be considered as an effective and harmless herbal compound for killing the parasite without toxicity to the host macrophages. Furthermore, it also can treat the CL by switching the mouse immune response towards a cell-mediated response (Th1); hence, it may be identified as a perfect therapeutic herbal drug for CL treatment.

We present a rare case of paragonimiasis masquerading as hypereosinophilia, asthma, and intracerebral hemorrhage for the last three years. Paragonimiasis is a rare cause of hemoptysis outside endemic regions. A strong index of suspicion is required to diagnose paragonimiasis outside the endemic areas. Diagnosis is usually delayed because of similarity of presentation to TB. Our patient was symptomatic with hemoptysis for three years. He gave history of eating raw crayfish and crabs while on leave to his native village in Nagaland. Diagnosis was confirmed on microscopy by detection of Paragonimus ova in sputum and bronchoal...

Authors: Norman FF, Comeche B, Chamorro S, López-Vélez R Abstract Introduction: Recent increases in population movements have created novel health challenges in many areas of the World, and health policies have been adapted accordingly in several countries. However, screening guidelines for infectious diseases are not standardized and generally do not include comprehensive screening for parasitic infections.Areas covered: Malaria, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, amebiasis, filariases, strongyloidiasis and schistosomiasis are reviewed, focusing on the challenges posed for their diagnosis and management ...

In conclusion, the ovarian location of HD should be considered in any differential diagnosis of a cystic lesion, while it does not exclude synchronous ovarian tumors. These cases reinforce the necessity of better measures of prophylaxis and screening of HD in endemic areas. PMID: 31912083 [PubMed - in process]
