Abstract Cancer cell detection in liquid biopsies has been a widely studied application in many microfluidic devices. The use of a common antibody, such as the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (Anti-EpCAM) or other specific antibodies, has facilitated the detection and study of many cancers. However, the use of such antibodies requires a priori knowledge of the cancer source, and many cancer subtypes are missed in screening applications. There remains a need to study a wider range of cancers that maintain the streamlined antibody approach in cell affinity separations. The Human transferrin receptor (CD71) has rec...

Abstract The detection and quantification of microRNA (miRNA) plays essential roles in clinical and biomedical research. Yet, it is of major challenge to sense miRNA with high degree of selectivity and sensitivity due to its unique characteristics of short length, similarity of sequence among family members and low abundance. Here, with the design of a new hairpin/DNA ring ternary probe, we describe the development of a rolling circle amplification (RCA) method for sensitively and selectively sensing miRNA from cancer cells. The target miRNA binds the hairpin/DNA ring probes through toehold-mediated strand displac...

McKenna, Virginia Senkomago, Hilda Razzaghi, Mona SaraiyaAbstractFrom 1970 to 2010 the foreign-born population in the United States has rapidly increased from 9.6 to 40.0 million individuals. Historically, differences in cancer rates have been observed between US-born and foreign-born individuals. However, comprehensive and up-to-date data on US cancer rates by birth place is lacking. To compare cancer mortality rates among foreign and US-born individuals, population-based cancer mortalit...

Authors: Suh YJ, Park JH, Bilegsaikhan SE, Lee DJ Abstract Prediction of malignant behavior of pheochromocytoma (PC) or paraganglioma (PG) is of limited value. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the French 'Cortico et Médullosurrénale: les Tumeurs Endocrines' (COMETE) network in Paris (France) facilitate accurate differentiation of malignant PC/PG based on genetic information. Therefore, the objective of this transcriptome analysis is to identify the prognostic genes underlying the differentiation of malignant PC/PG in the TCGA and COMETE databases. TCGA carries data pertaining to multigenomic analysi...

A research opp that I had lined up fell through right before I graduated so I'm applying to positions right now as a post bacc. I've had a decent amount of undergrad research experience (about 2000 hours and defended an honors thesis) and would prefer an experience where I get a decent amount of independence and a chance to be a co-author. I'm primarily interested in translational cancer research of the wet lab variety. I'm familiar with the NIH postbacc programs. Are there any other... post bacc research

We present a video highlighting the crucial surgical steps of a successful pelvic exenterative procedure followed by perineal reconstruction with a muscle-sparing flap technique.A 72-year woman with history of stage II vulvar epidermoid carcinoma, treated with radical surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy. At two-year follow-up local recurrence was diagnosed, handled with large excisional surgical treatment. Within four years a second local recurrence occurred, with infiltrative and bulky dimensions extending to perianal region and vaginal wall.A multidisciplinary surgical approach with curative intent was performed, involving...
