Preston couple reveal how they went from unfit to super-toned in 16 WEEKS

Paul Maddern, from Preston, felt 'down' after gaining three stone, while his bride-to-be, Abi, saw her weight creep up before having surgery to correct scoliosis so the pair hired a trainer to help them slim.

This study aimed to obtain reference values of lumbar lordosis (LL) and lower LL (LLL) from normal asymptomatic groups, determine the relationship between them and pelvic incidence (PI), and establish the predictive formula for ideal LLL in the elderly Korean population.MethodsStanding plain lateral radiographs of the whole spine, including the pelvis, were analyzed in asymptomatic adult male volunteers without back pain or prior surgery involving the spine or lower extremity. Volunteers with scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, segmental disk space narrowing, and/or compression fractures in the radiographs were excluded. The fol...

Abstract Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common spinal deformity disease in adolescents but its etiology and pathogenesis are still unclear. The current study aims to identify the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of G protein-coupled receptor 126 (GPR126) gene and AIS predisposition. GPR126 contains 26 exons and alternative splicing of exon 6 and exon 25 produces 4 protein-coding transcripts. We genotyped SNPs of GPR126 gene around exon 6 and exon 25 in 131 Chinese AIS patients and 132 healthy controls and provided evidence that SNP rs41289839 G>A is strongly associa...

CONCLUSION: Brace wearing during full spine LSI acquisition does not affect spinal measurements. The LSI under bracing treatment produces reliable measurements of spinopelvic parameters as well as vertebral rotation. These reproducible 3D data enable spine surgeons to assess the true shape of the deformity, to quantify rotation of each vertebra and enhance the understanding of the efficacy of bracing treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The initial curvature correction of 50% required for effective brace therapy could only be achieved in one third of the patients. On average, the correction was 31%. PMID: 30899990 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

AbstractPurposeWhile many studies have explored the association between paravertebral muscle (PVM) change and low back pain/lumbar spinal stenosis, little is known about PVM change in adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS). The present study explored the PVM change in ADS and investigated its association with bony structural parameters.MethodsWe evaluated 78 patients in ADS without radiculopathy (ADS group) and 65 healthy persons without degenerative lumbar diseases (control group). Percentage of fat infiltration area (%FIA) of multifidus muscle at L1 to S1 disk level was measured by MRI, using ImageJ software. Lumbar scoliosi...

AbstractPurposeVarious spinal and rib cage parameters measured from complex examinations were found to be correlated with preoperative pulmonary function tests (PFT). The aim was to investigate the relationship between preoperative rib cage parameters and PFT using biplanar stereoradiography in patients with severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.MethodsFifty-four patients, 45 girls and nine boys, aged 13.8  ± 1.2 years, with Lenke 1 or 2 thoracic scoliosis (>  50°) requiring surgical correction were prospectively included. All patients underwent preoperative PFT and low-dose biplana...

Conclusion. This study replicated the associations of four GWAS-associated SNPs with occurrence of AIS in our Chinese population. However, none of these SNPs was associated with curve severity and progression. The results suggest that curve progression may be determined by environmental (nongenetic) factor, but further study with a larger sample size is required to address this issue. Level of Evidence: 4

Conclusion. ARSN can be clinically used to place thoracic and lumbosacral pedicle screws with high accuracy and with acceptable navigation time. Consequently, the risk for revision surgery and complications could be minimized. Level of Evidence: 3

Concave paravertebral muscle tone and stiffness were greater than those on convex side in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients. The asymmetric biomechanical characteristics of paravertebral muscles are closely related to the severity of scoliosis.

Abstract OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in transcranial electric motor-evoked potentials - TceMEP on upper limbs and the incidences of postoperative brachial plexopathy between patients with kyphotic and scoliotic trunk shapes. METHODS: In the period of January 2011-January 2017, 61 consecutive patients (mean age: 18.4 years ± 4.4 years (range: 10-32)) with pediatric spinal deformity underwent surgery in our Department. Eight of them had a kyphotic trunk deformity (Scheuermann kyphosis, neurofibromatosis, posterior thoracic hemivertebra), and the rest of the ...
