Borderline tuberculoid leprosy in childhood onset systemic lupus erythematosus patient.

In conclusion, we have reported a rare case of leprosy in the course of c-SLE. Leprosy should always be considered in children and adolescents with lupus who present skin abnormalities, particularly with hypoesthesic or anesthesic cutaneous lesions. Longitudinal myelitis secondary to an acute flare of systemic lupus erythematosus has been reported in the literature. There have been few published cases of complete functional recovery in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus–related longitudinal myelitis (systemic lupus erythematosus–related longitudinal myelitis). Of those cases, none have described in detail the rehabilitation course of treatment. In the current case, intensive rehabilitation was coupled with aggressive pharmaceutical treatment resulting in almost full functional recovery. A 23-yr-old African American woman with a history of systemic ...

Conclusions: We confirmed the presence of A. cantonensis in several provinces, which ratifies the endemic nature of this zoonosis in the national territory. Rattus spp. specimens constitute the definitive hosts of the parasite, which together with the presence of intermediate hosts, indicates the zoonotic potential of this parasitic infection. Authors: Rada AM, Hernández-Gómez C, Restrepo E, Villegas MV Abstract Beta-lactamases are enzymes with hydrolytic activity over beta-lactam antibiotics and they are the main resistance mechanism in Gram-negative bacteria. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL), AmpC, and carbapenemases have the greatest clinical and epidemiological impact in hospital settings. The increasing frequency and worldwide spread of these enzymes have limited the therapeutic options in hospital-acquired infections and those originating in the community. In Colombia, surveillance networks and research groups began studying t...

Conclusion: Under-registration of leptospirosis in the region highlights the necessity to use more than one diagnostic test to identify Leptospira in patients from endemic areas. Underregistration could be a common situation throughout the country. PMID: 31529857 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusions: There is a risk of leptospira infections having a late diagnosis given their unspecific clinical presentation, which generates a high number of differential diagnoses. The early management in the intensive care unit could decrease the incidence of complications and the mortality of patients with leptospirosis. PMID: 31529853 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusion: Our results show a substantial increase in the direct medical costs of patients with urinary tract infections caused by beta-lactam-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (cephalosporins and carbapenems). This situation is of particular concern in endemic countries such as Colombia, where the high frequencies of urinary tract infections and the resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics can generate a greater economic impact on the health sector. Conclusion. The epidemiological characteristics of leptospirosis in horses suggest an endemic presentation of the infection and its role as reservoirs of the bacteria; however, it is necessary to elucidate the pathogenesis of the disease with complementary studies. CONCLUSION: In this study, we found a severe nasal disease with destruction and deformity of the nasal septum in 25% of the cases, probably associated with late diagnosis. Leishmania (V.) braziliensis was the predominant species. We described a case of mucosal leishmaniasis in Colombia caused by L. (L.) amazonensis for the first time. We report the case of a 48-year old woman with long-standing lepromatous leprosy of 15 years of evolution, with a bacterial index of 4 in the direct smear and the initial skin biopsy. The patient was treated with multidrug therapy for 32 months although the treatment recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) is only for 12 months. A skin biopsy was taken to determine if there was an active disease. We observed a diffuse dermal inflammation with numerous foreign body giant cells and vacuolated macrophages (Virchow´s cells). These cells contained granular acid-fast material that was also positive with immunohi...
