Musa, Shi Zhao, Daozhou Gao, Qianying Lin, Gerardo Chowell, Daihai HeAbstractLassa fever, also known as Lassa hemorrhagic fever, is a virus that has generated recurrent outbreaks in West Africa. We use mathematical modelling to study the Lassa fever epidemics in Nigeria from 2016-19. Our model describes the interaction between human and rodent populations with the consideration of quarantine, isolation and hospitalization processes. Our model supports the phenomenon of forward bifurcation where the stability betwee...

Polyphenolic compounds from aqueous phase extractions can reduce metal salts into nanoparticles and stabilize them in one step. Although gold nanoparticles are well described in the literature as anti...

Publication date: August 2020Source: Nonlinear Analysis: Real World Applications, Volume 54Author(s): Zhihui Ma, Shufan Wang, Xiaohua LiAbstractThe aim of this paper is to theoretically study the effect of the contacting distance (CTD) between the susceptible and infectious individuals in controlling infectious diseases. This paper formulates a generalized SEIR model incorporating the effect of the contacting distance (CTD). The dynamical behaviors of the proposed model are investigated and the controlling measures of the infectious diseases are developed. The results show that the contacting distance (CTD) between the sus...

In this study, 272 blood samples were collected from pet dogs in five districts of Shenzhen, China. Babesia DNA was detected in 30 samples with an overall prevalence of 11.0 % in pet dogs in Shenzhen. The difference in the positive rate between female and male pet dogs, among different breed, and among the five sampling sites was not significant, while the age and health status of pet dogs significantly influence the positive rate of Babesia spp. infection. Sequencing results showed the presence of only B. vogeli in all of the samples tested. Sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis revealed that all 30 strains of Bab...

This study aimed to detect the Leishmania spp. in bats. 146 bats, representing 16 different species belonging to the Molossidae, Vespertilionidae, and Phyllostomidae families, were received and processed for collection of tissues. Skin samples were collected from 100% of the bats, and liver samples were collected from 87% (n=127). After evaluating the quality of the DNA extracted by means of PCR directed to the IRBP gene, the samples considered suitable for the Leishmania detection test were submitted for PCR directed to Leishmania kDNA, and to confirm positivity, were tested to the SSUrRNA gene-directed Nested-PCR. The Le...

Conclusion: Acute colonic volvulus in our region is not as uncommon as in other parts of the world. This disorder must be suspected, when a patient presents with abdominal pain, abdominal distension, a bean sign on plain X rays or/and a whirl sign in a CT scan. We present a 20-year-old male patient who presented himself after a car accident, and was diagnosed with a rupture of traumatic hydatid cysts due to hives rash. In the operation, a scolicidal gent was administered to the cyst, the cyst wall was partially excised and the germinative membranes were removed. Medical treatment with albendazole was started. The postoperative period was quiet. The intraperitoneal traumatic rupture of a hydatid cyst is rare, but it can cause severe anaphylactic reactions and biliary peritonitis. Although a rare and broken hydatid cyst due to trauma may present with skin lesions in a patient in an...

A 25-year-old man living in Tehran (a non-endemic and very rare area for schistosoma) suffers from symptoms such as hematuria with suprapubic pain, dysuria, fever, nausea and vomiting. Urine analysis showed a lot of red blood cells, after using cystoscopy of the area and receiving a bladder biopsy, a definitive diagnos...
