A Talk with Epic at HIMSS23 Including Their Work to Incorporate Generative AI

Epic started out as a rather inert data repository, but decades of use and growth have allowed it to look beyond the EHR itself. According to Project Manager Erika Koch, they have taken on the pressing challenges of health care: making doctors’ work lives easier, reducing costs, and improving the patient experience. Work with genomics and rare diseases is underway. Seth Hain, Senior Vice President of R&D, talked about how they are integrating generative AI, in collaboration with Microsoft’s Azure AI. The tool can be used for something as simple as categorizing inbox messages, or on a higher level to draft a response to a patient that the doctor uses as a starting point for a personal message. This is inline with all the talk about ChatGPT that happened at HIMSS 2023. Epic also wants to expand collaboration inside teams and with outside providers—even the life sciences—through what they call a “health grid.” Watch the video to learn more about what Epic was talking about at this year’s HIMSS conference and a look at some of the work they’re doing with technologies like generative AI.
