Take AI Out of the Conversation Completely and Focus on Results

When designing analytical systems for clinicians, “Take AI out of the conversation completely,” advises Sameer Sethi, Senior Vice President and Chief Data Analytics Officer at Hackensack Meridian Health. However, AI is woven throughout the 15-minute video interview below where Sethi is interviewed along with Prashant Natarajan, General Manager, Health & Life Sciences at H2O.ai.  Sethi’s message is that your users care about what AI can do for them, not that it is AI that’s accomplishing the task. Two critical uses for AI discussed by Sethi and Natarajan are conversational AI and searching unstructured documents for purposes such as recruiting patients for clinical trials. Conversational AI extracts meaning from conversations. To work well, it has to understand semantics, such as knowing that “no evidence of diabetes” is a negation. Just because the word “diabetes” appears in the text doesn’t mean that the patient has it.  Using an AI solution that has this kind of “intelligence” built in is key to building trust with clinical users. Other uses for AI suggested by Sethi include improving documentation and coding, patient engagement, identifying patients eligible for end-of-life care, and transmitting data to clinicians. Natarajan discussed the need for health AI to meet 2 important (and related) objectives: The highest model accuracy possible as a performance measure Creating trust & transparency in A...
