A commentary on the importance of the article by Abed, Khalil, and Moser for “Awareness of modifiable acute myocardial infarction risk factors has little impact on risk perception for heart attack among vulnerable patients”

The term Middle East likely dates back to the height of the British Empire's expansion in Asia in the 1850's.1 It is a geographical term rooted in colonialism. If one stood outside the East India Office in London and looked toward Asia, one would have called the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire the Near East. The Far East began with India and continued on to the Pacific Ocean. And the Middle East was everything else in between. Today the term often refers to countries of West Asia, including, for some, Turkey and the countries of North Africa and continuing on through Iran and Afghanistan.
