Nonhormonal strategies for hot flushes

A wide choice is available for women who do not wish to use estrogen. Paroxetine, fluoxetine, citalopram, venlafaxine and desvenlafaxine have been found to be effective in several studies. In 2013 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved paroxetine to treat moderate to severe hot flashes (vasomotor symptoms) associated with menopause. Clonidine is a centrally acting alpha-adrenoceptor agonist that was developed originally for the treatment of hypertension. It is licensed for the treatment of hot flushes in some countries.
