A 40-year-old man was treated with tonsillectomy and underwent early surgical exploration because of bleeding. Postoperative bleeding complications were treated with bronchoscopy. In addition to obesity, normal thyroid function, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and current tobacco abuse with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, biochemistry revealed severe hypercholesterolemia (total cholesterol 572 mg/dL) and hypertriglyceridemia (1,220 mg/dL). During the postoperative period, low doses of propofol (up to 2 mg/kg/h for 10 hours), along with remifentanil (up to 0.0016 mg/kg/h for 20 hours), midazolam, and tramadol, were neede...

AbstractSevoflurane is one of the most widely used anesthetics with recent concerns rising about its pediatric application. The synaptic toxicity and mechanisms underlying its long term cognition impairment remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the expression and roles of homeodomain interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2), a stress activating kinase involved in neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity, and its downstream JNK/c ‐Jun signaling in the long term toxicity of neonatal Sevoflurane exposure. Our data showed that neonatal Sevoflurane exposure results in impairment of memory, enhancement of anxiety,...

CONCLUSION: Preoperative fasting times in pediatric patients far exceed the durations set by international guidelines. Given that many children reported extreme feelings of hunger and thirst or emotional effects from the fast, these durations need to be optimized in order to improve patient experience. DISCUSSION: About one third of the participating departments already perform VATS in LA; others have plans to introduce the method. The majority of respondents regard multimorbid, elderly and lung patients as the main target groups, as fewer inflammatory, respiratory and neurological complications are expected. Authors: Song B, Yang Y, Teng X, Li Y, Bai W, Zhu J Abstract A randomized double-blinded controlled trial was performed to explore the association between pre-operative anxiety and intra-operative butorphanol requirement to evaluate the precise sedative requirement and to confirm the sedative effect of butorphanol in patients receiving lower-limb orthopedic surgery. The Amsterdam pre-operative anxiety and information scale and the Ramsay sedation score (RSS) were used to assess the patients' pre-operative anxiety score and sedation state during surgery. Patients were divided into two groups according to their pre-o...

The extraction of third molar teeth has usually been associated with a high level of anxiety, mainly from a lack of knowledge. We compared the effect of different informed consent formats on the perioperative anxiety level of patients scheduled for third molar surgery and explored the effects of watching a video about the surgical procedure from the Internet before the procedure on the patients' anxiety level.

Abstract BACKGROUND: An unintended consequence of medical technologies is loss of personal interactions and humanism between patients and their healthcare providers, leading to depersonalisation of medicine. As humanism is not integrated as part of formal postgraduate anaesthesiology education curricula, our goal was to design, introduce, and evaluate a comprehensive humanism curriculum into anaesthesiology training. METHODS: Subject-matter experts developed and delivered the humanism curriculum, which included interactive workshops, simulation sessions, formal feedback, and patient immersion experience. The ...

CONCLUSIONS: Administration of midazolam as premedication for laparotomy patients did not improve the quality of recovery up to one week after surgery. General prescription of midazolam as premedication can be questioned and might only suit some patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION: (NCT01993459); registered 29 October, 2013.
