The CNIO links telomeres to the origins of liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis

This study is the first to show that alterations in the functioning of telomeres lead to changes in the liver that are common to diseases associated with an increased risk of liver cancer. This finding provides the basis for understanding the molecular origin of these diseases, as well as identifying new therapeutic strategies for their prevention and control.

We combined all available studies to estimate how many people with hepatitis B also have hepatitis D, a virus infection that only affects people with hepatitis B. About 1 in 22 people with hepatitis B also have hepatitis D, increasing to 1 in 6 when considering people with liver disease. Hepatitis D may cause about 1 in 6 of the cases of cirrhosis and 1 in 5 of the cases of liver cancer that occur in people with hepatitis B. Hepatitis D is an important contributor to the global burden of liver disease.

ConclusionOur results suggest that GM disorders are more common in patients with LC ‐HCC. The butyrate‐producing genera were decreased, while genera producing‐lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were increased in LC‐HCC patients. Further studies of GM disorders may achieve early diagnosis and new therapeutic approaches for HCC patients.
