Prophylactic photobiomodulation protocol in perioral herpetic infection: case series

The herpes simplex virus usually affects the lips and the perioral region, and the use of antivirals is the most common treatment. A preventive approach is not yet consolidated in the literature. Our aim was to evaluate the clinical response of prophylactic photobiomodulation in individuals with perioral herpetic infection (PHI). Five patients with a history of PHI underwent 20 sessions of photobiomodulation: 10 consecutive sessions and another 10 sessions after 6 months. The photobiomodulation parameters used were 780 nm, 100 mW, 40.65 J/cm2, 4 J/point, 60 points in the perioral region.
