Neuropsychologists, did you ever consider pursuing a Neuroscience/bench science PhD?

I see a lot of posts comparing different careers, though none comparing neuroscience academia/industry and neuropsychology. Context: I originally set out in undergrad to go for a straight clinical psych PhD. Though before that I was pre-med (changed my path due to a positive, but informative, medical shadowing experience) and still hold a love for genetics/endocrinology/biology.
