Durham Miners ’ Gala: ‘ UNISON is strong and ready for a fight ’

Last weekend, UNISON northern region joined the annual Durham Miners’ Gala, one of the world’s biggest celebrations of trade union power and working class culture. Over 200,000 people attended the event, which has been held annually in Durham since 1871. The gala is the biggest event in the trade union calendar. This year was met with celebration after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing thousands of people, UNISON Northern regional secretary Clare Williams said: “The pandemic showed why solidarity is so important. Trade unions were at the forefront of protecting people in their workplaces “With this government – the poorer you are, the higher the price you pay. Struggling families are forced to choose between heating and eating. Food banks are stretched to breaking point. Mental health services are on their knees. One in four people are missing meals.” And Ms Williams continued: “Public services on the brink of crisis – due to years of this government’s funding cuts.” “Those employed in health, schools, councils and care have given their all in the last few years and continue to do so.” And Ms Williams concluded: “They shouldn’t have to take what amounts to a pay cut in all but name if the government doesn’t announce pay rises that kick inflation into touch”.
