COPD Readmission: The Missing Link
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a devastating disease with significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare cost. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for one-third of all deaths, and the mortality from COPD continues to rise.1,2 The response to this health crisis has been to improve hospital and healthcare efficiencies with the development of certified COPD management programs, including the one introduced in 2007 by the Joint Commission.3 The focus was directed towards six attributes, including staff education, use of spirometry, smoking cessation, risk factor reduction, patient education, and coordination of care.
