We greatly appreciate Dr. Frencher's thoughtful comments on our study. We completely agree that this work is a starting point for future efforts to elucidate the underlying drivers of inequality in healthcare delivery, as well as health itself. While insurance status certainly aids in isolating race a causal factor, undoubtedly the other factors mentioned impact both access to care and decisions to undergo surgical treatment as well. Employment status, family circumstances, zip code, availability of surgical options and health plan policies can and do affect healthcare.
