New study sheds light on norovirus outbreaks, may help efforts to develop a vaccine
(Infectious Diseases Society of America) Outbreaks of norovirus in health care settings and outbreaks caused by a particular genotype of the virus are more likely to make people seriously ill, according to a new study in The Journal of Infectious Diseases. NEW YORK (WABC) -- More people are getting sick after eating McDonald's salads.
Officials say the outbreak started in May and was caused by a parasite infection called Cyclosporiasis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it has now sickened 507 people in 16 states, including New York and Connecticut.
Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, fever and body aches.
So far, 24 people have been hospitalized.

More Than 600 People Say Eating Chipotle Made Them Sick – But Officials Still Don’t Know the Cause
More than 600 people said they got sick after eating at a Chipotle outside Columbus, Ohio, health officials said Monday. And they still don’t know what has caused it.
The Delaware General Health District began investigating the restaurant, located in Powell, Ohio, on July 31 after it received numerous reports from patrons who ate there between July 26 and July 30. The location was briefly closed for an investigation.

During 2009-2015, the Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System (FDOSS) received reports of 5,760 outbreaks that resulted in 100,939 illnesses, 5,699 hospitalizations, and 145 deaths. Among 2,953 outbreaks with a single confirmed etiology, norovirus was the most common cause of outbreaks [38%] and outbreak-associated illnesses [41%], followed by Salmonella.
