New drugs and perspectives for new anti-tuberculosis regimens
Publication date: Available online 24 February 2018 Source:Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia (English Edition) Author(s): S. Tiberi, M. Muñoz-Torrico, R. Duarte, M. Dalcolmo, L. D’Ambrosio, A. Zumla, G.-B. Migliori Tuberculosis (TB) continues to cause more deaths worldwide than any other infectious disease. Even though global TB incidence has been decreasing for some time, the proportion of drug resistance is increasing, contributing to greater complexity, morbidity, mortality, and cost. Since the advent of rifampicin in the 1960s, and the implementation of the standard quadruple anti-tuberculosis regimen in th...

Prognosis of hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia
Conclusion Long-term mortality following hospitalization for CAP is high. Charlson score and lack of fever are potential indicators for decreased long-term survival. As novel parameters, baseline BUN/albumin ratios and ALT levels are significantly associated with late mortality. Further interventions and closer monitoring are necessary for such subgroups of patients. (Source: Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia)

Theron The goals of the End TB strategy, which aims to achieve a 90% reduction in tuberculosis (TB) incidence and a 95% reduction in TB mortality by 2035, will not be achieved without new tools to fight TB. These include improved point of care (POC) diagnostic tests that are meant to be delivered at the most decentralised levels of ca...

Differential expressions of MDM2 and TAP73 in cancer and cancer-adjacent tissues in patients with non-small-cell lung carcinoma
Conclusions TAP73 mRNA expression significantly increased in cancer tissues than cancer-adjacent tissues in all NSCLC patients and in patients with adenocarcinoma. Meanwhile, the fold-change of DNP73/TAP73 ratio was similar to TAP73. MDM2 protein expression significantly increased in cancer tissues in female NSCLC patients. The Bronchiectasis Severity Index and FACED score for assessment of the severity of bronchiectasis
Conclusion There is a small but significant correlation between the two scales: a tendency is observed for patients to be classified with a higher BSI compared to the FACED score. This can be explained by the fact that BSI (and not FACED) evaluates parameters including BMI, hospitalization and exacerbations before study, chronic colonization by other microorganisms and development of cystic bronchiectasis. Further studies should address how these scores may impact clinical practice. (Source: Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia)
