Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Risk of Parkinson Disease: A Nationwide Longitudinal Study
Objective Several small-scale studies have suggested a biological link between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Parkinson disease (PD). However, the temporal association of OCD and subsequent PD remained unclear. Methods Here, we used Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database and included the data of 28,722 patients with OCD (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification code: 300.3) and 287,220 matched controls between 2001 and 2009. They were followed until the end of 2011 to identify diagnosis of new-onset PD (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Re...

Emotional Reactivity, Emotion Regulation, and Regulatory Choice in Somatic Symptom Disorder
Objective Despite the transdiagnostic importance of emotional dysregulation in psychopathology, the exact nature of emotional dysregulation in somatic symptom disorders (SSDs) is still unclear. The present study compared measures of emotional reactivity, emotion regulation (ER), and regulatory choice between n = 62 individuals with SSD (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition) and n = 61 healthy participants. Methods Participants underwent two ER tasks, assessing a) efficacy of reappraisal and suppression, and 2) regulatory choice, while electrodermal activity and heart rate variabil...

The Somatoform Spectrum Within the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology System: A Taxometric Test of the Latent Structure
Conclusions Across the three independent samples, qualitatively distinct subgroups within the distribution of chronic somatic symptoms could not be identified. Therefore, continuous representations seemed to best represent the structure of somatic symptoms. Implications of these findings for etiology and treatment are discussed. The Predictors of Somatic Symptoms in a Population Sample: The Lifelines Cohort Study
Conclusions Number of somatic symptoms should be regarded as a multifactorial measure with many predictors. Mental disorders form one predictor, but there are other stronger ones, including stress and general medical disorders. The bidirectional relationship between functional somatic syndromes and multiple somatic symptoms is compatible with the notion that perception of bodily symptoms is a key component of both. The Association of Social Connectivity and Body Weight With the Onset of Type 2 Diabetes: Findings From the Population-Based Prospective MONICA/KORA Cohort
Objective Low levels of social connectivity are related to the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), and this study investigates the role of body weight in this association. Methods In a sample of 9448 participants followed for a mean of 15.3 years (186,158.5 person-years) from the Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease Augsburg/Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg population-based cohort conducted in Germany, we investigated the association of social connectivity, measured by the Social Network Index, and body mass index (BMI) with the risk of clinically validated T2...
