Asymptomatic catheter-related venous thrombosis in a child with cystic fibrosis: When to treat?
We describe a case of a 5-year-old child who presented with a CVC-related infection due to Candida parapsilosis. Echocardiogram revealed the presence of an incidental thrombus, measuring 1.4  cm × 0.4 cm, at the tip of the catheter, adherent to the right atrial wall and discrete from the tricuspid valve leaflets. Review of article: Obesity and Clotting:  BMI independently contributes to hypercoagulability after injury. J Trauma Acute Care Surgery. 2015 January;78(1):30-38
Trauma is a health issue of epidemic proportions and accounts for the majority of deaths in people aged 1 –44 years. Uncontrolled hemorrhage after injury is attributed to early death. Because of this, there is significant interest in understanding the postinjury spectrum of clotting dysfunction as a result of hypocoagulability or hypercoagulability. On presentation, one-third of severely injured and bleeding patients have acute traumatic coagulopathy with significant morbidity and a four-fold increase in mortality. From the editor's perspective …
As the year is coming to an end, I would like to start the dialogue about the exciting initiative Nursing Now. As nurses we demonstrate our knowledge and skills to our patients, their families, and the public every day. We play a vital role in providing quality care, disease prevention, wellness teaching and health promotion. We work to advance care and lead change. Now we will have an even greater role to play in the future. (Source: Journal of Vascular Nursing)

Impact of Patient Safety Indicators on readmission after abdominal aortic surgery
Patient safety is a critical component of health-care quality and measures created by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to identify hospitalizations with potentially preventable adverse events. This analysis evaluated whether Patient Safety Indicator (PSI) events after open surgical repair (OSR) or endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) were associated with increased risk of readmission. Patients undergoing elective repair of nonruptured AAA from 2009 to 2012 were selected in the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review files using the International Classification of Disease...

Teaching module for improving oncology nurses' knowledge and self-confidence about central line catheters caring, complications, and application: A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design
The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of implementing an educational module based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines on the nurses' knowledge and self-confidence regarding central line catheters (CVCs) caring, complications, and application. A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used. A sample of 100 oncology nurses from oncology units participated in two groups, experimental group (N  = 50) and control group (N = 50). The participants completed knowledge test and self-confidence scale before and after the educational program. (Source: Journal of Vascular Nursing)

Accurate measurement of arterial blood pressure is an essential component of patient care management. Patients undergoing surgical and interventional procedures often require direct measurement of blood pressure via an arterial catheter. The indications and necessity for placement of an arterial line are based on the type of operation or interventional procedure, patient condition, comorbidities, anticipated treatment regimen, and/or frequency of blood draws. Placement of an arterial line can contribute to pain and discomfort during insertion. (Source: Journal of Vascular Nursing)

Patient experiences of living with coronary stent
Cardiovascular disease is among the most important disorders in the developed world and the main cause of death and disability in all countries considered. Using coronary stent in cardiovascular patients, as an effective treatment, has greatly reduced the requirement for cardiac surgery. The study was carried out to explore lived experiences of patients living with coronary stents. The qualitative phenomenological study was performed to explore lived experiences of patient with coronary stent. Postoperative major surgery patients developing silent deep vein thrombosis: A prospective observational study
This study aimed to determine the incidence of sDVT. Secondary objective is to identify the associated factors for the use of DVT prophylaxis and Caprini risk scores among major surgery patients. This prospective observational study involved postoperative surgical patients who are at risk of developing sDVT. The Caprini risk-assessment scores were calculated, and each subject had a preoperative and postoperative compression ultrasound complemented by duplex venous ultrasonography of deep venous system. Improving outcomes in patients with peripheral arterial disease
The benefits of risk-factor reduction associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is established and supported by the literature. The purpose of this quality-improvement project was to reduce modifiable risk factors such as diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), hyperlipidemia (HLD), and tobacco use in patients with PAD, as well as to demonstrate improvement in quality of life (QoL) and 6-minute-walk distances. For this quality-improvement project, 29 patients from three providers within a cardiology office were identified over a 6-week period. (Source: Journal of Vascular Nursing)

Practical experience implementing supervised exercise therapy for peripheral artery disease in urban and rural Minnesota
Although numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of treadmill-based supervised exercise therapy (SET) in improving pain-free and total walking distance and quality of life in individuals with peripheral artery disease (PAD), historically this treatment has not been widely available outside of research settings. Last year's decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to cover up to 36 sessions of SET over a 12-week period for beneficiaries with symptomatic PAD1 has enabled greater implementation of this effective treatment in clinical settings.
