Treatment of acute proximal humeral fractures in children with modular external fixator
Conclusions Advantages of the external fixation are rapid mobilization of the joint, low invasiveness, a single surgery and the possibility to correct any secondary displacement. It is important to underline that the positioning of external fixator should be implanted by expert surgeons and that the patients must cooperate during the entire process up to the time of the removal of the fixator. Aluminium-induced acute neurotoxicity in rats: Treatment with aqueous extract of Arthrophytum (Hammada scoparia)
Conclusions This study strongly suggested that H. scoparia extract could possibly restore the altered neurological capacities and antioxidant power in rats, and it could even be a good alternative to chelating agents or other chemical medicines against Al-induced neurotoxicity. A clinical study of multiple trauma combined with acute lung injury
Conclusions The activation of the inflammatory reactions and the excessive release of inflammatory mediators are the key link causing multiple trauma combined with ALI. The content of serum inflammatory mediators is closely related to the severity of the disease. (Source: Journal of Acute Disease)

Clinical value of detection on serum monocyte chemotactant protein-1 and vascular endothelial cadherin levels in patients with acute cerebral infarction
Conclusions The serum levels of VE-cadherin and MCP-1 were significantly increased in patients with acute cerebral infarction. MCP-1 and VE-cadherin can increase the secretion of interleukins and matrix metalloproteinases, which can result in the carotid artery plaque formation, unstable plaque properties and the injury of nerve function. Clinical study of emergency treatment and selective closed reduction for the treatment of supracondylar humerus fracture in children
Conclusions Emergency closed reduction combined with percutaneous Kirschner-wire fixation for Gartland type-II and type-III supracondylar humerus fracture in children has less trauma, low swelling degree of affected limb in perioperative period, and good effect on the recovery of the elbow joint function after operation. Ultrasonic characteristics and clinical significance of umbilical cord blood flow in acute fetal distress
Conclusions The ultrasonic characteristics of umbilical cord blood flow in patients with acute fetal distress are increase of the resistance, reduction of blood flow, and significant reduction of ultrasonic parameters of RI, PI and S/D. The degree of hypoxia, oxidative stress, myocardial injury and brain injury can also be evaluated. (Source: Journal of Acute Disease)

Correlation study of podocyte injury and kidney function in patients with acute kidney injury
Conclusions Contents of podocyte injury molecules in urine of patients with acute kidney injury such as nephrin, desmin, P-cadherin, podocin, podocalyxin and CD2AP raised remarkably and and the changes were consistent with the changes of kidney function indexes in the blood and urine samples. Risk of acute anastomotic leakage after preoperative radiotherapy in rectal cancer
Conclusions Radiotherapy may affect anastomotic healing and increase the risk of leakage. This risk is higher in low anterior anastomoses where a protective stoma may be considered. A better evaluation and support for patients with preoperative radiotherapy is needed in order to diminish the concomitant risk factors as much as possible. (Source: Journal of Acute Disease)

Comparison of ultrasound interventional and laparoscopic surgeries for ovarian cyst pediculotorsion
Conclusions Ultrasound interventional surgery has quite the same curative effect as laparoscopic surgery in ovarian cyst pedicle pediculotorsion, which also can reduce the surgical trauma, shorten the operation time and lower the operation cost. (Source: Journal of Acute Disease)

Recent advances on acute paraplegia
Publication date: Available online 20 September 2016 Source:Journal of Acute Disease Author(s): Gentian Vyshka, Dritan Muzha, Meri Papajani, Maksim Basho Paraplegia and spinal cord injuries are issues of major concern to the actual medicine. But recent advances have raised hopes for a better prognosis, which has always been poor or infaust since medicine was practiced. However and interestingly enough, some concepts and definitions on the occurrence have survived for millennia. Once encountered as an issue, traumatic or non-traumatic paraplegia needs a multidisciplinary approach and a careful staging of the problem. ...

Bilateral optic neuropathy in acute cryptococcal meningitis
We reported a case of cryptococcal meningitis presenting with bilateral optic neuropathy in an immunocompetent patient. A 64-year-old Malay gentleman with no medical comorbidities presented with acute bilateral blurring of vision for a week, which was associated with generalised throbbing headache and low grade fever. He also had somnolence and altered consciousness. Visual acuity in both eyes was no perception of light with poor pupillary reflexes. Extraocular muscle movements were normal. Anterior segments were unremarkable bilaterally. Fundoscopy revealed bilateral optic disc swelling. CT scan of the brain showed multif...
