Characteristics and Outcomes of a Single-Centre Cohort of Adult Congenital Heart Disease Patients Referred for Heart Transplant
Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) services increasingly encounter heart failure (HF) in the ageing ACHD population. Optimal timing of referral for heart transplant (HTx) evaluation in this heterogeneous population is complex and ill-defined. We aim to outline the characteristics and outcomes of ACHD patients referred for HTx from a large Australian ACHD centre. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy in Patients With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction and Incident Cancer
It has been postulated that cancer hampers the delivery of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) for heart failure (HF). However, few data are available in this regard. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Thoracoscopic Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion with the AtriClip PRO2: An  Experience of 144 Patients
To report the clinical outcomes of thoracoscopic left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) with the AtriClip PRO2 device (Atricure Inc, Mason, OH, USA). Stroke risk reduction with LAAO in patients with atrial fibrillation is now well-established. Many surgical and percutaneous techniques have been used, with varying rates of success. The percutaneous devices have had issues with procedural complications and peridevice flow. Thoracoscopic AtriClip offers an epicardial linear closure of the appendage at its ostium. The Effect of Pulmonary Hypertension on Mortality and Intensive Care Unit Admission in Patients With SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Severe COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome, hypoxia, systemic complications, and increased mortality. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a major global health issue associated with worsening symptoms and increased mortality. This systematic review aimed to assess the influence of PH onset among COVID-19 patients on all-cause mortality and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

The Role of Comorbidities in Predicting Functional Improvement After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation
Patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) have a high comorbidity burden. We sought to stratify patients into functional outcomes using the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ-12), a patient-reported outcome with benefits over both the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification and the original 23-item KCCQ, and to evaluate the importance of comorbidities in predicting failure of functional improvement post-TAVI in a contemporary cohort. Evaluating the Use of Unfractionated Heparin with Intra-Aortic Balloon Counterpulsation
Evidence supporting anticoagulation with unfractionated heparin (UFH) in patients with an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) to prevent limb ischaemia remains limited, while bleeding risks remain high. Monitoring heparin in this setting with anti-factor Xa (anti-Xa) is not previously described. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Incidence and Predictors of Readmissions to Non-Index Hospitals After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation in the Contemporary Era in New South Wales, Australia
In Australia, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is only performed in a limited number of specialised metropolitan centres, many of which are private hospitals, making it likely that TAVI patients who require readmission will present to another (non-index) hospital. It is important to understand the impact of non-index readmission on patient outcomes and healthcare resource utilisation. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Preoperative Variables of 30-Day Mortality in Adults Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: A Systematic Review
Risk adjustment following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is vital for clinical quality registries, performance monitoring, and clinical decision-making. There remains significant variation in the accuracy and nature of risk adjustment models utilised in international PCI registries/databases. Therefore, the current systematic review aims to summarise preoperative variables associated with 30-day mortality among patients undergoing PCI, and the other methodologies used in risk adjustments. 2024 Australia –New Zealand Expert Consensus Statement on Cardiac Amyloidosis
Over the past 5 years, early diagnosis of and new treatments for cardiac amyloidosis (CA) have emerged that hold promise for early intervention. These include non-invasive diagnostic tests and disease modifying therapies. Recently, CA has been one of the first types of cardiomyopathy to be treated with gene editing techniques. Although these therapies are not yet widely available to patients in Australia and New Zealand, this may change in the near future. Given the rapid pace with which this field is evolving, it is important to view these advances within the Australian and New Zealand context. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)
