How a few inconsistent respondents can confound the structure of personality survey data: An example with the Core-Self Evaluations Scale.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(6), 2023, 400-407; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000719In survey data, inconsistent responses due to careless/insufficient effort (C/IE) can lead to problems of replicability and validity. However, data cleaning prior to the main analyses is not yet a standard practice. We investigated the effect of C/IE responses on the structure of personality survey data. For this purpose, we analyzed the structure of the Core-Self Evaluations scale (CSE-S), including the detection of aberrant responses in the study design. While the original theoretical model of the CSE-S assumes that the c...

Psychometric properties and measurement invariance of a short form of the Unified Multidimensional Calling Scale (UMCS).
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(6), 2023, 408-415; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000722This paper reports on the development of a unidimensional short scale for measuring career calling (UMCS-7). The scale has been developed drawing from the theoretical model behind the Unified Multidimensional Calling Scale (UMCS; Vianello et al., 2018), according to which calling is composed of Passion, Prosociality, Purpose, Pervasiveness, Sacrifice, Transcendent Summons, and Identity. The UMCS-7 integrates classical and modern conceptualizations of career calling and can be used when time constraints prevent using the UMC...

A deep dive into compassion: Italian validation, network analysis, and correlates of recent compassion scales.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(5), 2023, 371-384; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000717The present multi-sample study (N = 723) explores in depth the construct of dispositional compassion and its assessment, relying on two recent multidimensional scales: the Sussex-Oxford Compassion Scale—toward Others (SOCS-O; Gu et al., 2020) and the Compassion Scale (CS; Pommier et al., 2020). First, we validated the two scales in Italian, finding substantial support for their original factor structures and second-order solutions aggregating first-order factors into a general dispositional compassion factor. Second, we t...

A trait-based network perspective on the validation of the French Short Boredom Proneness Scale.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(6), 2023, 390-399; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000718The Short Boredom Proneness Scale (SBPS) has recently been developed. Using a standard confirmatory factor analysis, we report on the structural validation of the French SBPS, which provided support for the original construct. A network analysis (n = 490) revealed the structure of the relationships between the SBPS and the two facets of Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II (CEI-II). The analysis revealed positive connections between the boredom and curiosity items, whereas the connections between the boredom and explorati...

Measurement invariance of the short Dark Tetrad across cultures and genders.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(5), 2023, 331-336; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000715The last two decades revealed a plethora of scientific examinations on the Dark Triad (narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) and Dark Tetrad traits (Dark Triad + sadism) in a variety of contexts. Short scales for the assessment of these traits have been very influential and widely used. Building upon previous research, the 28-item Short Dark Tetrad (SD4) was introduced as a measure for the assessment of the Dark Tetrad traits. A recent study found that the SD4 is invariant across genders, but little is known concerning...

Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17: Factor structure and uniform differential item functioning across gender and age in HIV orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia.
This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 (PSC-17) in a sample of children orphaned or made vulnerable (OVC) by HIV in Zambia. Caregivers of 1,076 OVC (55.1% boys; Mage = 12.91 years) completed the PSC-17. Competing models, including confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), hierarchical CFA, bifactor CFA, exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM), and bifactor ESEM, were tested to evaluate the optimal factor structure of the PSC-17. Results showed that the bifactor ESEM provided the best approximation of the PSC-17 data with a well-defined general psychosocial proble...

The web-based assessment of mental speed: An experimental study of testing mode effects for the trail-making test.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(5), 2023, 349-353; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000711Although web-based cognitive assessments have gained increasing attention in recent decades, it is still debated whether unstandardized test settings allow for comparable measurements as compared to proctored testing, particularly for speeded cognitive tests. Therefore, two within-subject experiments (N = 73 and N = 72) compared differences in means, criterion correlations with measures of intelligence, and subjective test quality perceptions of a trail-making test between a proctored paper-based, a proctored computerized, ...

Measuring Italian resilience: Cross-cultural validity and psychometric properties of the Essential Resilience Scale in Italian and Canadian contexts.
This study developed an Italian adaptation of the ERS and recruited participants from Italy (N = 500) to complete the measure along with criterion validity measures of broad personality traits and related psychological concepts. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) demonstrated robust evidence for a well-fitting three-factor model of the ERS, with items strongly loading onto their respective latent factors. Utilizing Samejima’s graded response model, most item discrimination values were moderate-to-high, and category threshold parameters were well-distributed throughout the latent continuum. The ERS showed correlations in ...

Machine learning and prediction in psychological assessment: Some promises and pitfalls.
Modern prediction methods from machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming increasingly popular, also in the field of psychological assessment. These methods provide unprecedented flexibility for modeling large numbers of predictor variables and non-linear associations between predictors and responses. In this paper, we aim to look at what these methods may contribute to the assessment of criterion validity and their possible drawbacks. We apply a range of modern statistical prediction methods to a dataset for predicting the university major completed, based on the subscales and items of a scale for...

Developing and testing an instrument to measure the culture for psychological empowerment in organizations (IMPEC).
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(5), 2023, 354-370; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000708Psychological empowerment—the experience of competence, meaning, self-determination and impact at work—has become very popular in organizational research. Meta-analytic results show many positive consequences of psychological empowerment and many different antecedents such as positive leadership, high performance practices, and work design characteristics. However, scarce research is available on how organizational culture influences psychological empowerment. We believe a missing instrument is one reason for the underd...

Development and validation of an improved hardiness measure: The hardiness resilience gauge.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(3), 2023, 222-239; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000709Previous research shows that psychological hardiness is an important factor contributing to stress resilience in individuals. Of the various instruments available to measure hardiness, the most commonly used is the Dispositional Resilience Scale (DRS). Despite its demonstrated utility, the DRS-15 still has a number of serious limitations, including low subscale reliability and limited construct validity. The present work aims to create a new hardiness scale that addresses these limitations. A pool of new items plus the orig...

The Dutch 20 item Centrality of Event Scale: Factor structure, psychometric properties, and prospective value.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 39(3), 2023, 211-221; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000704Event centrality is defined as the extent to which a memory of a traumatic event forms a reference point for people’s identity and attribution of meaning to other experiences in their life. Event centrality is typically measured with the Centrality of Event Scale (CES; Berntsen & Rubin, 2006). The present study’s first aim was to investigate the underlying factor structure and construct validity of the Dutch 20-item CES (CES-20) in undergraduates (N = 1,091). The second aim was to test whether the CES-20 could prospecti...

Testing the consistency of the moral growth mindset measure across people with different political perspectives.
We examined measurement invariance (MI) and differential item functioning (DIF) across different political affiliations to test whether the MGM Measure functioned consistently. We also examined the relationship between MGM, moral foundations, and political affiliation with t-tests and regression analyses. The findings reported that first, at the test level, the strictest MI was achieved, so the measurement structure was consistent between the different political groups. Second, no item showed significant DIF, so the MGM Measure was not biased at the item level. Third, t-tests and regression analyses reported that MGM and i...
