The role of noninvasive scoring systems for predicting cardiovascular disease risk in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions FIB-4 and NFS might be useful in identifying those who are at higher risk of CVD among patients with NAFLD. However, APRI was not recommended for this use. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

The prognostic role of controlling nutritional status and skeletal muscle mass in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after curative treatment
Background Nutritional status and skeletal muscle mass affect the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nutritional status is closely associated with skeletal muscle mass. Here, we investigate the effect of controlling preoperative nutritional status and skeletal muscle mass on the prognosis of HCC after curative treatment. Methods This retrospective analysis contained 181 patients who received curative treatment of HCC including liver resection or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) therapy. Nutritional status and skeletal muscle mass were evaluated prior to therapy using the controlling nutritional status (CO...

The effect of sarcopenia and serum myokines on prognosis and survival in cirrhotic patients: a multicenter cross-sectional study
Objective Sarcopenia is one of the most significant contributors to morbidity in patients with chronic liver disease. Serum myokines are potential biomarkers for detecting early sarcopenia. We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum myokines and cirrhosis-related mortality in the early stages of the disease. Methods In total, 262 patients and 50 healthy controls were enrolled in this study, which was designed as a multicenter cross-sectional study. At the beginning of the study, sarcopenia was defined by computed tomography scans using the third lumbar vertebra skeletal muscle index. Serum myostatin,...

“Long-term follow-up and prognosis of celiac hepatitis”
Introduction Celiac disease has been associated with abnormal liver function tests at diagnosis that usually resolve with a gluten-free diet (GFD). The aim of this study was to assess the evolution of liver involvement and possible long-term complications in patients on a GFD. Methods Retrospective and single-center study, which included all individuals with Celiac disease followed in specialized consultation in a tertiary referral hospital. Results A total of 162 patients were included, most of them female (77.8%) with a median age of 24 years (IQR, 7–39). Seventy-four (45.7%) patients had abnormal l...

Risk prediction model for early postoperative death in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: a retrospective study based on random forest algorithm and logistic regression
Conclusion This model provides an intuitive and practical tool for future studies based on large-scale cohorts by exploring the risk factors of early death in patients with HCCs undergoing surgery. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Continuous clinical remission with biologics in ulcerative colitis: the ‘AURORA’ comparison study
Conclusions Based on a strict definition of clinical remission, all biologics appear equally effective at 1 year. Changing to vedolizumab is more effective than switching to another anti-TNFα in TNFα failures. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Screening for colorectal cancer: awareness and adherence among Italian women
Conclusion Our findings have revealed a concerning low awareness about and adherence to CRC screening in women and have highlighted the fundamental role of healthcare workers and of enabling factors in the decision process. Interventions should be directed to increasing awareness, and to promote cancer prevention screening pathways more centered on women’s health needs and convenience. Effect of altered gut microbiota on visceral hypersensitivity of postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome mice
Conclusion Gut microbiota alteration induced increased SCFAs, 5-HT and NMDAR subunits expressions were associated with visceral hypersensitivity in PI-IBS mice. The critical role of gut microbiota in improving visceral hypersensitivity was further identified by treatment of antibiotics cocktail and co-housing. Pilot study of an elimination diet in adults with mild to moderate Crohn’s disease
Background There remains limited data supporting the efficacy of dietary therapy in adults with Crohn’s disease (CD). This was a pilot study of the McMaster Elimination diet for CD (MED-CD), which excludes several potentially detrimental ingredients commonly found in the Western diet. Methods Prospective study in adults with mild-moderately active CD [Harvey–Bradshaw Index (HBI) scores 5–16] and endoscopic disease activity of>7 (or ≥4 for isolated ileal disease) as measured by the Simple Endoscopic Score for Crohn’s disease (SES-CD). Patients were treated for 2 weeks using oral enteral nutrition (EN)...

Real-world evidence of quality of life improvement in patients with distal ulcerative colitis treated by mesalazine: the Quartz study
Background Distal ulcerative colitis (UC) is responsible for distressing symptoms and reduces quality of life (QoL). Oral and topical formulations of 5-amino-salicylic acid are the first line therapy for mild to moderate distal UC. Objective Our aim was to evaluate the impact of mesalazine treatment for mild to moderate ulcerative proctitis and proctosigmoiditis on patient QoL. Methods Ninety-three patients with mild to moderate ulcerative proctitis and proctosigmoiditis, initiating a treatment with Pentasa, were prospectively included. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline to W8 in patient he...
