Sex-related differences and hormonal effects in the Dry Eye Assessment and Management (DREAM) study
Conclusion In the DREAM study, women experienced more severe DED signs than men. Further, postmenopausal women presented with more severe DED signs than premenopausal women. Elucidating these differences may improve DED diagnosis and provide future direction in understanding sex-related differences in DED. Trial registration number NCT02128763. Vaccine-associated corneal graft rejection following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination: a CDC-VAERS database analysis
Conclusions This study outlines a possible temporal relationship between corneal graft rejection and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. An earlier onset of VAR was observed in patients who had a history of endothelial keratoplasty and following the second dose of vaccination. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Genomics enabling personalised glaucoma care
Glaucoma is a leading cause of visual impairment and a significant public health concern, but despite ongoing advances in our understanding of the disease, several important clinical challenges remain. With the number of affected people projected to increase substantially over coming decades, novel approaches to screening, risk stratification, therapy and glaucoma research are essential to deal with this expanding burden in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Genomics may hold the key to unlocking further biological insights and enabling precision medicine, in which glaucoma care is tailored to the individual patient, ...

Time to treat the climate and nature crisis as one indivisible global health emergency
Over 200 health journals call on the United Nations (UN), political leaders and health professionals to recognise that climate change and biodiversity loss are one indivisible crisis and must be tackled together to preserve health and avoid catastrophe. This overall environmental crisis is now so severe as to be a global health emergency. The world is currently responding to the climate crisis and the nature crisis as if they were separate challenges. This is a dangerous mistake. The 28th Conference of the Parties (COP) on climate change is about to be held in Dubai while the 16th COP on biodiversity is due to be held in T...

More support for deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty over penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus, but questions remain
In this study, Borderie et al demonstrate long-term advantages of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) compared to penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in the treatment of keratoconus. In particular, they noted differences in long-term endothelial cell count and tendency to develop ocular hypertension favoring the DALK group. This is one of the largest studies on this topic; it provides long-term insight due to its extended follow-up period, and it reinforces the findings published in a previous report from the same group.1 While the current body of evidence suggests that DALK may be comparable in some ways, and superior in...

Heteromeric formation with {beta}A3 protects the low thermal stability of {beta}B1-L116P
Conclusions Decreased βB1-crystallin thermal stability in the presence of the cataract-related L116P mutation contributes significantly to congenital cataract formation. Moreover, its formation of heteromers with βA3 protects against the low thermal stability of βB1-L116P. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Real-world clinical and molecular management of 50 prospective patients with microphthalmia, anophthalmia and/or ocular coloboma
Conclusion This study highlights the importance of thorough clinical and molecular phenotyping of MAC patients to provide appropriate multidisciplinary care. Routine genetic testing for both unilateral and bilateral cases in the clinic may increase diagnostic rates in the future, helping elucidate genotype–phenotype correlations and informing genetic counselling. Treatment outcomes and their determinants of IgG4-related ophthalmic disease: a territory-wide cohort study
Conclusion In this cohort, 60% of patients required long-term maintenance oral corticosteroid. Elevated pretreatment serum IgG4 level and Mikulicz syndrome were associated with steroid dependence. Debulking surgery is an alternative for a subgroup of patients with discrete orbital lesions, normal baseline IgG4 level and no Mikulicz syndrome. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Visual outcome and ocular complications in patients with lacrimal gland carcinoma after eye-sparing surgery and adjuvant radiation therapy
Conclusion Eye-sparing surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy in patients with lacrimal gland carcinoma has a reasonable overall visual prognosis. Patients with tumours crossing the orbital midline and Hispanic patients have a higher risk of severe vision loss. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Association of hyperopia with incident clinically significant depression: epidemiological and genetic evidence in the middle-aged and older population
Conclusions Hyperopia was significantly associated with an increased risk of incident CSD. This was independent of genetic predisposition to hyperopia, emphasising the importance of regular vision screening and correction of hyperopia to reduce the risk of CSD regardless of genetic risk. Characterising collateral vessels in eyes with branch retinal vein occlusions using widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography
Conclusions WF SS OCTA revealed that a large fraction of CVs that form after BRVO are extramacular, and the morphology of CVs varies as a function of retinal location. Depth-resolved study of CVs may offer valuable insights on the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to the development of macular oedema. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)
