Inherited causes of combined vision and hearing loss: clinical features and molecular genetics
Combined vision and hearing loss, also known as dual sensory impairment, can occur in several genetic conditions, including ciliopathies such as Usher and Bardet-Biedl syndrome, mitochondrial DNA disorders and systemic diseases, such as CHARGE, Stickler, Waardenburg, Alport and Alstrom syndrome. The retinal phenotype may point to the diagnosis of such disorders. Herein, we aim to provide a comprehensive review of the molecular genetics and clinical features of the most common non-chromosomal inherited disorders to cause dual sensory impairment. Extending the utility of anterior corneal buttons through refrigeration and glycerol cryopreservation: utility rate and outcome analysis (see page 1415) Glycerol cryopreservation can safely extend the utility of donor anterior corneal grafts for up to two years. This method not only reduced the wastage of scarce donor corneal tissue but also was cost effective. Clinical course and treatment of archipelago keratitis: a Herpesviridae keratitis subtype (see page 1419) Archipelago keratitis is a Herpesviridae stromal keratitis subtype associated with a high recurrence rate, requiring antiviral and anti-inflammatory drugs over ...

Skills assessment after a grape-based microsurgical course for ophthalmology residents: randomised controlled trial
Conclusions Training models based on grapes are equal to VR simulators and silicon suture pads to provide solid training tasks for ophthalmology residents to master basic microsurgical skills, and might have advantages in lower economic cost, and easy availability. Trial registration number ChiCTR2000040439. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Association between vision impairment and depression: a 9-year, longitudinal, nationwide, population-based cohort study in South Korea
Conclusions Patients with VI had an increased risk of depression from 3 years before to 5 years after registration. Significant risk factors included severity, male sex and younger age. Thus, public mental health services are necessary to provide appropriate support and interventions to people before and after registration as visually impaired. Intraocular methotrexate for epithelial downgrowth: long-term outcomes in a multicentre case series
Conclusion We report the largest case series of diffuse, sheet-like EDG treated with intraocular MTX with follow-ups up to 10 years. Intraocular MTX may be used effectively to achieve eradication of EDG in cases where surgery is not amenable. However, further recommendations to guide treatment remain warranted. Three-muscle surgery for large-angle esotropia in chronic sixth nerve palsy: comparison of two approaches
Conclusions Two three-muscle surgeries, ISM and VM were both effective for large-angle esotropia in Chinese patients with chronic sixth nerve palsy. However, attention should be paid to potential complications. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Population-based incidence of intraocular tumours in Olmsted County, Minnesota
Conclusion In a population-based setting, most intraocular tumours are benign and melanocytic. Although malignant lesions are less common, it is important to remain vigilant with appropriate monitoring given the potential for vision loss and life-threatening malignancy. Predictors of myopic macular degeneration in a 12-year longitudinal study of Singapore adults with myopia
Conclusions In adults with myopia without MMD, tessellated fundus, age, SE and AL had good predictive value for incident MMD. In adults with MMD, 1 in 10 eyes experienced progression over the same period. Older age, more severe myopia and longer AL were independent risk factors for progression. Characterisation of the vascular anterior surface of type 1 macular neovascularisation after anti-VEGF therapy
Conclusions More extensive coverage of neo-CC is associated with a lower likelihood of development of macular atrophy in eyes receiving antivascular endothelial growth factor therapy, suggesting the protective effect of a type 1 MNV may be mediated by the development of a neo-CC and may provide insights into the biological significance of MNV as a response mechanism in eyes with age-related macular degeneration. Development of retinal atrophy after subretinal gene therapy with voretigene neparvovec
Conclusion Subretinal injection of VN can lead to RPE atrophy with consequent photoreceptor loss in and outside of the bleb area. Fundus autofluorescence is an important tool to monitor atrophic changes in patients after gene therapy. Interestingly, while areas of atrophy also included central areas, the functional benefits of the treatment did not appear to be affected and remained stable. Cardiovascular morbidity and all-cause mortality in patients with retinal vein occlusion: a Danish nationwide cohort study
Conclusion In a cohort of the Danish population aged 40 years or more, patients with RVO had a 13% increased risk of incident CVD compared with unexposed individuals. Risk of CVD was increased after 2011, when intravitreal angiostatic treatment was introduced and referral practices altered. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Choriocapillaris flow deficit and the risk of referable diabetic retinopathy: a longitudinal SS-OCTA study
Conclusions A greater baseline CC FD% detected by SS-OCTA reliably predicted higher risks of RDR in participants with type 2 DM. Thus, CC FD% may act as a novel biomarker for predicting the onset and progression of DR. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)
