Biological and behavioral correlates of body weight status among rural Northeast Brazilian schoolchildren
ConclusionChildren with lower physical fitness levels as well as those with lower motor coordination quotient are more likely to be overweight and/or obese. No significant relationship was observed between birth weight and weight status in childhood. Strategies to reduce childhood obesity should consider biological, behavioral, and also environmental predictors. (Source: American Journal of Human Biology)

Circadian cortisol dynamics across reproductive stages and in relation to breastfeeding in the Philippines
ConclusionsThese findings are consistent with known alterations in hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal axis function during reproduction, and in particular point to marked and progressive elevation in maternal cortisol during the course of gestation. Cortisol appears to return to nulliparous levels after parturition, with levels suppressed below nulliparous levels during lactation. (Source: American Journal of Human Biology)

Estimating impacts of the nuclear family and heritability of nutritional outcomes in a boat ‐dwelling community
ConclusionsOur results show that resource flows and distributions within Shodagor households account for a significant amount of variance in nutritional outcomes. Problems commonly associated with increasing market integration may lead to negative outcomes for children, while mother's autonomy may lead to positive outcomes. Our models also indicate that environmental factors account for more variation in these outcomes than expected, relative to genetics, and we discuss the implications. Iron and infection: An investigation of the optimal iron hypothesis in Lima, Peru
ConclusionIn this study, morbidity status was not predictive of iron deficient status over a six‐month interval period, but nonreplete iron status was shown to be associated with current morbidity symptoms. These results support investigating iron status as an allostatic system that responds to infection adaptively, rather than expecting an optimal preinfection value. Digit ratio (2D:4D) in Chinese women with gastric cancer
ConclusionsDecreased 2D:4D (especially of the left hand) may suggest a higher prenatal testosterone (lower prenatal estrogen) exposure in north Chinese women with GCA. (Source: American Journal of Human Biology)

Sex ‐specific patterns in cortical and trabecular bone microstructure in the Kirsten Skeletal Collection, South Africa
ConclusionsThis research highlights sex‐specific differences in patterns of age‐related bone loss, and provides context for discussion of contemporary South African bone health. While the study sample demonstrates indicators of poor bone quality, osteoporosis research continues to be under‐prioritized in South Africa. (Source: American Journal of Human Biology)

Dental enamel defects predict adolescent health indicators: A cohort study among the Tsimane ’ of Bolivia
ConclusionsDefective enamel formation in infancy and childhood predicted adolescent health outcomes and may be primarily associated with infection. Extent of enamel defects and stunted growth may be equally predictive of adverse adolescent health outcomes. (Source: American Journal of Human Biology)

Evaluation of childhood nutrition by dietary survey and stable isotope analyses of hair and breath
ConclusionWhile YAQ and stable isotope data reflected strong cultural influences in diet, no significant gender‐based nor age‐based differences were detected. Significant covariation between YAQ and isotopes existed and demonstrate the potential of stable isotopes for characterizing children's diet. (Source: American Journal of Human Biology)
