Is There a Safe Alcohol Consumption Limit for the General Population and in Patients with Liver Disease?
Semin Liver Dis DOI: 10.1055/s-0044-1785228 Excessive alcohol consumption represents an important burden for health systems worldwide and is a major cause of liver- and cancer-related deaths. Alcohol consumption is mostly assessed by self-report that often underestimates the amount of drinking. While alcohol use disorders identification test - version C is the most widely used test for alcohol use screening, in patients with liver disease the use of alcohol biomarker could help an objective assessment. The amount of alcohol that leads to significant liver disease depends on gender, genetic background, and coexistence of co...

Evaluation of measured and calculated small dense low-density lipoprotein in capillary blood and association with the metabolic syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: Capillary blood is an alternative to venous blood for sdLDL-C measurement and is stable for 24 h after collection. Estimated and directly measured sdLDL-C associate with the MS being accessible tools for cardiovascular risk assessment.PMID:38570026 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2024.117897 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)

Fish oil supplementation during pregnancy, anthropometrics, and metabolic health at age ten: A randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSIONS: In this randomized clinical trial, children of mothers receiving n-3 LCPUFA supplementation had increased BMI at age 10 y, increased risk of being overweight, and a tendency of increased fat percentage and higher metabolic syndrome score. These findings suggest potential adverse health effects from n-3 LCPUFA supplementation during pregnancy and need to be replicated in future independent studies. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00798226.PMID:38569788 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.12.015 (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Prognostic impact of metabolic syndrome in patients with primary endometrial cancer: a retrospective bicentric study
CONCLUSION: In our analysis, MetS in patients with EC was not associated with impaired oncological outcome. However, our findings show that obesity itself is an important comorbidity associated with significantly reduced PFS.PMID:38570343 | PMC:PMC10991018 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-024-05699-1 (Source: Clin Med Res)
